Computer chip errors could improve efficiency

Researchers have claimed that computer chips could become up to 30 per cent more power efficient and much cheaper if they were allowed to make more mistakes.

According to a report by the BBC, scientists found that there was some advantage in tolerating more hardware errors and designing software that could cope with them.

The research at The University of Illinois was part funded by chip maker Intel. It noted that as the components of processors became smaller they were more prone to mistakes and were harder to manufacture.

It concluded that rather than the expensive pursuit of perfection in chip manufacturing it may be more efficient to accept and deal with built in flaws.
